Background: Fragilis (Ifitm3) belongs to the interferon (IFN)-inducible transmembrane protein family, which consists of five highly similar transmembrane proteins that are conserved among mammalian species. It is thought to be the first gene to mark the onset of germ cell competence during embryonic development in mice. Cells expressing high levels of fragilis protein go on to express stella, a protein found exclusively in lineage-restricted germ cells. Studies on fragilis family members could help elucidate the mechanisms through which interferons act as signaling molecules during embryonic development.
