Background: DP-3, also known as TFDP3 (transcription factor Dp family, member 3), HCA661 (hepatocellular carcinoma-associated antigen 661) or CT30 (cancer/testis antigen 30), is a 405 amino acid protein that localizes to the nucleus and belongs to the E2F/DP family. Expressed predominately in testis, but also present at low levels in other tissues, DP-3 functions to regulate the activity of E2F transcription factor proteins and, via this regulation, plays a role in E2F-mediated apoptosis and may be involved in tumor growth and metastasis. The gene encoding DP-3 maps to human chromosome X, which contains nearly 153 million base pairs and houses over 1,000 genes. In conjunction with chromosome Y, chromosome X is responsible for sex determination. There are a number of conditions related to an abnormal number and combination of sex chromosomes, some of which include Turner's syndrome, color blindness, hemophilia and Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
