Background: SLC32A1 is an integral membrane protein responsible for transport of inhibitory neurotransmitter into synaptic vesicles. The SLC32A1 protein is expressed in synaptic vesicles of both glycine and GABAergic synapses throughout the CNS. Expression of the SLC32A1 protein changes during development and also in response to patterns of neuronal activity. It is a member of amino acid/polyamine transporter family II.
