Background: MGEA5, or meningioma expressed antigen 5, is a multifunctional enzyme containing two distinct enzymatic activities and two distinct active sites. MGEA5 was originally identified as a human hyaluronidase, which is immunogenic in meningioma patients. MGEA5 is an N-acetylglucosaminidase, cleaving GlcNAc but not GalNAc from glycopeptides. MGEA5 also possesses Histone acetyltransferase (HAT) activity and acetylates 'Lys-8' of histone H4 and 'Lys-14' of histone H3.
