Background: Chemokine receptors belong to the superfamily of G protein coupled receptors, which regulate the trafficking and activation of leukocytes and operate as co-receptors in the entry of HIV1. CXCR1 is the receptor for interleukin-8, which is a powerful neutrophil chemotactic factor. Binding of IL-8 to CXCR1 causes activation of neutrophils. CXCR1 expression also plays an important role in many inflammatory processes.
