Background: Breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP ) is an ABC superfamily member; when expression of BCRP is enforced by transfection of the cDNA in drug-sensitive human breast cancer MCF-7 cells, the cloned transfected cells become resistant to mitoxantrone, daunorubicin and doxorubicin, display diminished intracellular accumulation of daunorubicin, and manifest an ATP-dependent increase in the efflux of Rhodamine 123 compared to vector transfected controls.
