Background: The semaphorins make up a family of inhibitory axon guidance molecules that include secreted, transmembrane, and GPI anchored extracellular molecules. Via their interaction with Plexin/Neuropilin receptor complexes, the semaphorins are involved in regulating axon guidance by inhibiting axons from growing toward incorrect targets. Semaphorin 3F belongs to the class 3 secreted group of molecules and shows ubiquitous expression in a range of neuronal and non-neuronal tissues including brain, mammary gland, liver, kidney, lung, spleen, muscle and heart. The role of the semaphorins in non-neuronal tissues is poorly characterised.
