Background: NT5C2 has been implicated in the maintenance of a constant composition of intracellular purine/pyrimidine nucleotides in cooperation with other nucleotidases. It preferentially hydrolyzes inosine 5-prime-monophosphate (IMP) and other purine nucleotides. This enzyme can be allosterically activated by ATP, as well as other compounds. Aberration of this enzyme is thought to be related to urate production observed in hyperuricemia and gout.
