Background: Human Epididymis Protein 4 or HE4 is a small whey acidic polypeptide (WAP) expressed in a number of normal tissues, including male reproductive system, regions of the respiratory tract and nasopharynx. It is highly expressed in a number of tumour cells lines, such ovarian, colon, breast, lung and renal cells lines. Initially described as being exclusively transcripted in the epididymis it is secreted as an N glycosylated protein and and has homology with some protease inhibitors including elafin, SLPI and eppin. Expressed in a number of normal tissues, including male reproductive system, regions of the respiratory tract and nasopharynx. Highly expressed in a number of tumors cells lines, such ovarian, colon, breast, lung and renal cells lines. Initially described as being exclusively transcribed in the epididymis.
