Background: Androgen receptor is a member of the steroid superfamily of ligand-dependent transcription factors. Like other members of the family, the androgen receptor consists of an amino terminal modulating domain, a central DNA binding domain, a hinge region and a carboxy terminal ligand binding domain. The amino terminal regions of steroid receptors are highly variable in size and amino acid composition while the DNA and ligand binding domains exhibit substantial sequence homology.
