Background: G protein-coupled receptors (GPRs, or GPCRs) contain 7 hydrophobic transmembrane domains embedded in hydrophilic intra- and extracellular loops and transduce a variety of hormone, endogenous peptide, and neurotransmitter signals into intracellular effects via G proteins. GPR35 is a member of this family and is an orphan receptor. GPR35 expression was reported only in rat intestine (O'Dowd et al., 1998) by Northern hybridization; however, another study showed that GPR35 is expressed widely, including pancreatic islets and skeletal muscle, with higher levels in adult lung, small intestine, colon, and stomach.
