Background: PDE11A4 (Phosphodiesterase 11A isoform 4) is one of the four human isoforms of PDE11A and plays a role in signal transduction by regulating the intracellular concentration of cyclic nucleotides cAMP and cGMP. It catalyzes the hydrolysis of both cAMP and cGMP to 5'-AMP and 5'-GMP, respectively. The PDE11A gene undergoes tissue-specific alternative splicing that generates structurally and functionally distinct proteins.
